Business Operating System

I’ve recently been reading the book Traction by Gino Wickman. A few clients had mentioned or asked about Wickman’s EOS (Entrepreneurial Operating System), so I’d ordered the book awhile ago. Now that I’m actually giving it the attention it deserves, I am excited about the concept of a business operating system.

The concept of a business operating system isn’t new. Most business operating systems are focused on optimizing production factors, but often incorporate important aspects of a company’s mission and culture. One of the earliest examples of a business operating system is the Toyota Production System (TPS) developed starting in 1948. Many of the concepts in the TPS have been generalized as LEAN Manufacturing and have been adopted by many other companies.

As one who started my career writing software, when I hear “operating system” I naturally think of computer operating systems (OS). A computer OS provides lots of benefits to both software developers and the people who use the computer. In general, the OS defines the standards for how other software works with the computer and provides a standardized interface between the different components of the entire system (both hardware and software).
